What if I am a slow climber?

Slow climber

No worries - this is a frequent concern. There is plenty of time built into the trekking schedule, even for those who like to climb very slowly, take pictures, or just enjoy your time on the mountain. The guides will encourage you to go slowly, constantly saying "pole pole" (which means slowly in Swahili), because it is much better for you to go at a slow pace.  By walking slowly, your body will be able to acclimatize better and will increase your chances of summiting.

What if I cannot summit?

Cannot summit

We will try our hardest to help everyone reach 'The Roof of Africa', but even if a climber cannot reach the summit, we will try out very best to ensure they still have an incredible and rewarding experience.

If a climber elects not to continue, or the guide deems further trekking to be unsafe, the climber will be assisted down the mountain. Our guides have an expert knowledge of the network of shortcuts to quickly and safely bring climbers to the most convenient campsite or hut.

if someone in my group needs to descend, Does the entire party also have to descend?

Descend

No, there will be multiple guides on your climb. If one member needs to descend then a guide will bring them down while the rest of the party will be able to continue unaffected.

How long will I be hiking each day?

How long hiking

You can see this from the description of each of the routes. The exact time you are hiking will also depend on you and your groups trekking pace.

Do you accept clients from other countries?

Clients from other countries

Yes, definitely! We are based in the US, but we accommodate clients from any country.

I am a single climber, do I have to share a room and tent with someone else?

Single climber

We will arrange a single room and tent for you if you wish to pay for the single supplement ($250 per package). Otherwise, you will be paired with another adventurer of the same sex in the hotel and during the trek.

What is the best way to increase my chance of summiting Kilimanjaro?

Increase chances

Before

  • Choose a longer route

  • Train, at least two months before, and include long hikes if possible

  • Assemble the right gear for your climb

During

  • Listen to your body and to your guides

  • Try to avoid altitude sickness by:

    • walking slowly

    • drinking lots of water and eating enough food

    • participating on all optional acclimatization hikes

    • considering taking Diamox

  •  Prevent other illnesses by disinfecting your hands after the bathroom and before meals

do I need rain gear If I am climbing during the dry season?

Rain gear

Yes. The base of the mountain is in the rain forest and wet weather can occur anytime during the year.  A quality waterproof jacket and pants are definitely necessary.

How cold does it get on the mountain?

Cold

Although Kilimanjaro is near the equator, and on the base it can be very warm, you will be sleeping in temperatures as low as 20F (-7C) and could be hiking in temperatures even as low as -20F (-29C). Brrrr!

What should I expect the accommodations to be like?

Moshi

You will stay at the Stella Maris Lodge. Kilimanjaro and Beyond chose this location for your accommodation because it is a non-profit hotel, near Kilimanjaro, dedicated to funding the Stella Maris School for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Have a little extra room in your bag? Consider bringing something for the students

Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route uses basic huts. The first two huts sleep four people each, and the last hut is dorm-style with bunk beds.

On all the other routes, there will be 2 people per a 3 person mountain tent (solo summit seekers see single supplement). All camping equipment is carried, set up, and broken down by our porters.  A toilet tent will also be set up at every campsite. There are no opportunities for showering, but hot water will be provided for washing up.  For dining, there will be a separate tent with a table and chairs where all meals will be served.

Accommodation

What will I eat (even if i have dietary restrictions)?

Eat

You will be served a western style breakfast, lunch and dinner. You should bring snacks for the climb and/or safari.

Here at Kilimanjaro and Beyond we love food. This is why it is important to us that our clients eat well.  On the mountain our chefs can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free. Please tell us at booking about any special dietary needs and we'll make sure you eat well on the mountain.

How will you keep me safe?

Our guides are highly experienced to manage your health and safety, especially altitude sickness. All our guides are certified Wilderness First Responders and conduct twice daily health checks to measure your oxygen saturation and pulse. For every climb there will be bottled oxygen, portable stretcher, first aid kit, and a rescue plan in place in the event of an emergency.

Safety measures

How much equipment will I carry?

You will only be carrying your day pack. This should contain everything you need to make it from one campsite to the next. What you will have in your day pack will depend on your needs, but we generally recommend: water, snacks, waterproof clothes, camera, warm layer, gloves, and a hat. You can also ask your guide for their suggestions.

Everything else, including your duffel bag, will be carried by a porter. Your duffel bag will be brought from campsite to campsite. The weight per porter is limited to 15 kg (33 lbs). If you bring overweight luggage, you will need to retain an extra porter
